Enhancing Organizational Performance Through Effective Team Building: ERIPS Training Initiatives

In an era where organizational success heavily relies on the collective performance of its teams, the significance of effective team building cannot be overstated. Recognizing this, various divisional forest offices from Makawanpur, Kathmandu, Dhading, Lamahi, Forest Research and Training Center Lumbini Province, and the Ministry of Forest from Madesh Province, along with the Forest Directorate and Ministry of Forest Bagmati Province, as well as Agriculture and Forestry University, The Asia Foundation and National Association of Rural Municipalities in Nepal (NARMIN) invited the Eastern Research Institute of Positive Science (ERIPS) to conduct a comprehensive Team Building Training program for their staff members. The aim was to foster a vibrant, cooperative, and high-performing team environment. The trainings were facilitated by ERIPS CEO and Training expert Dr. RC Lamichhane.

Training Overview

The training events were precisely organized across respective districts and ministries, engaging approximately 350 staff members, including the minister, secretaries, and junior to senior-level officials. The duration of the training varied between 2 to 4 days, depending on the specific requirements and logistical considerations of each location.

Methodologies Employed

The Eastern Research Institute of Positive Science (ERIPS) strategically incorporated a blend of Appreciative Inquiry, Social Artistry, and Conflict Management approaches into its team-building training programs. This comprehensive methodology is rooted in positive psychology and organizational development theories, ensuring a participatory and impactful learning experience.

Appreciative Inquiry (AI)

Appreciative Inquiry is a strengths-based approach that shifts the focus from identifying problems to discovering and amplifying what works well within an organization. By engaging participants in conversations about their successes and aspirations, AI helps build a positive core that fosters collective efficacy. This approach encourages team members to envision a future where their strengths are fully utilized, creating a sense of shared purpose and motivation. The AI process involves four stages: Discover, Dream, Design, and Destiny, guiding teams to co-create actionable plans based on their highest potential.

Social Artistry

Social Artistry integrates creative and artistic processes into leadership and team-building activities. This approach enhances participants’ ability to innovate, empathize, and collaborate by tapping into their creative potential. Artistic activities, such as storytelling, role-playing, and visual arts, enable team members to express their ideas and emotions in new ways, breaking down barriers and fostering a deeper understanding among colleagues. The visioning process did not stop at the provincial level; each divisional forest office also developed its own ten-year vision for building high-performing, effective teams. Ministers, secretaries, DFOs, rangers, forest guards, and drivers came together, exchanging ideas and forging new strategies. Honorable Minister Ram Chandra Kurmi reflected that this was the first training he had ever attended with such a diverse team, calling it a real exercise in democracy. Drivers and lower-ranked staff felt it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with their superiors as colleagues. This created high levels of trust, respect, and bonding among team members. The dignity of the participants shone through, and the atmosphere was overwhelmingly positive.
